Welcome to the 2001 learning session at Westside Tech. Although it is still cold outside now is the time to prepare for gardening this spring. This session will focus on more "hands-on" work in the greenhouse. A section will be added on Greenhouse Management. 42 hours is the length of the course. So we will have "volunteer time" during the week for those who would like to get more out of their time here.

Well the new session will begin on the 27th. of this month and we only have commitment from:
  • Bernie Carranza
  • Maria Padilla
  • Joe Brown
  • Angel (didn't get the last name!)
  • So as of today we have four(4) peep's and we need, at least onemore person.

Now is the time to begin the indoor propagation of your seed. Especially your cool crops. We want to be ready with our garden veggies when things warm up. Our cool crops can be ready as soon as Tom Skilling or Paul Konrad tells us there is no more danger of frost. Actually U can check with the US Weather Bureau. I would recommend our cool crops to start May 15(on or about) and wait to set our warm crops until we can get a stable night temperature of 55°.

Remember to do a soil test. You can test It yourself with kits from Home depot, Sid's greenhouse or K-Mart. Or you can take a sample from 6-12 inches(A Horizon)down and send it to your county extension agent who will help you. Our county agent from the U of I is located at the Ag High School located near 111th. Pulaski (Oh...honors to that day!) Yes we do have a Chicago Public School where you child can get a solid start in the Agricultural Industry, the hidden career money maker.

Much like the child at the last Chicago Public School science fair held here at WSTI. Her research was Why do we talk to plants? Her answer was "...becuase we exhale carbon dioxide and plants take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen so....we have a recriprocal(sic) relationship with plants..!"

    2/10/01

At the present we are doing plant propagation for the spring gardens and indoor landscaping. To that end we have F.benjamini, Alocasia, Gardinia jasmonides and G.vietchii. We have Canna from seed and Gypsopium(cotton) and Tobacco(Wisconsin 38)which may be some type of federal violation, let me know. We also have Coleus X hybridus in crimson and varigated colors. We also have a sport from the varigated variety that is Lime Yellow and has huge leaves. Soon we shall be working on the Memorial Garden at Daley college and the Enterance garden at WSTI.

    2/2/02:

1/17/01: Thanks to Bernie Carranza, Maria Padilla for coming in to C the program. Sorry that we did not get enough students registered. The class will not start this time.
